Lighting Hope
Chalan Foundation works across 12 counties in Kenya, including eight arid and semi-arid land (ASAL) counties: Turkana, West Pokot, Kitui, Kajiado, Baringo, Samburu, Garissa and Tana River. Our reach also extends to Homa Bay, Bungoma, Bomet and Nandi. With a strong focus on public day secondary schools, we work alongside learners, educators, caregivers and communities to address barriers to education, wellbeing and opportunity. In ASAL settings, our approach responds to the intersecting challenges of climate vulnerability, household economic insecurity and limited access to essential services, connecting education and skills development with initiatives that strengthen household and community resilience.

Chalan Foundation’s story begins with a girl determined to stay in school. Growing up where girls’ education was not always prioritised, our founder experienced the uncertainty of pursuing an education without consistent support. Through encouragement from a neighbour, help from a communitiy, belief from a teacher and her own determination made a lasting difference.
That experience shaped a commitment to expand opportunities for other learners facing exclusion. It also revealed that educational progress depends on the people and systems surrounding a child: families, schools, communities and those willing to invest in their potential.
Today, Chalan brings that understanding to an integrated programme model that connects education access, life skills, wellbeing, digital learning and household resilience. We work alongside learners and communities, recognising their strengths and supporting their ability to shape their own futures.
Our purpose remains personal: to help ensure that a young person’s circumstances do not determine the limits of their opportunity.
