Practical capabilities for confident choices, responsible leadership and community service.
Life Skills & Leadership Development Programme
This is Chalan Foundation’s flagship programme. It helps young people develop the capabilities to understand themselves, build healthy relationships, navigate challenges and make informed decisions.
Learners face pressures that extend beyond academic work, including financial uncertainty, harmful social expectations, emotional distress and limited guidance about their future. Our programme complements classroom learning by creating opportunities to reflect, practise practical skills and develop confidence in everyday choices.
Leadership begins with how young people manage themselves, treat others and respond to challenges. We connect personal growth with responsibility, service and constructive participation in school and community life.
A PROGRESSIVE LIFE SKILLS LEARNING JOURNEY
Aligned with Kenya’s Competency-Based Education (CBE) approach, our Life Skills & Leadership Development programme complements Community Service Learning in schools, connecting personal development with practical action. Through reflection, collaboration and community-based activities, learners apply their knowledge, skills and values to real-world challenges while developing a sense of responsibility towards others.
The programme brings together 14 connected areas of learning:
1. Self-awareness — Understanding personal strengths, values, identity and areas for growth.
2. Empathy — Recognising others’ experiences, respecting differences and responding with compassion.
3. Effective communication — Listening actively, expressing ideas clearly and seeking support confidently.
4. Interpersonal relationships — Building healthy, respectful relationships and resolving disagreements constructively.
5. Critical thinking — Questioning information, examining evidence and considering different perspectives.
6. Creative thinking — Exploring new ideas and developing innovative responses to everyday challenges.
7. Problem-solving — Identifying challenges and working with others to develop, test and improve practical solutions.
8. Decision-making — Weighing options, consequences and ethical responsibilities to make informed choices.
9. Coping with stress — Recognising sources of pressure and developing constructive coping strategies.
10. Managing emotions — Understanding feelings and responding in ways that support personal wellbeing and respectful relationships.
11. Citizenship — Understanding rights and responsibilities, valuing diversity and participating meaningfully in school and community life.
12. Action research — Investigating school and community challenges through guided inquiry, gathering evidence, taking action and reflecting on results.
13. Mental health and wellbeing — Building mental health awareness, challenging stigma and recognising when and how to seek appropriate support.
14. Social entrepreneurship — Developing practical ideas that address social or environmental needs while building collaboration, initiative and responsible resource management.
Through Community Service Learning, these capabilities come together as learners identify community needs, co-design inclusive responses, participate in service activities and reflect on their contribution. EcoFuture provides an environmental action pathway within this journey, linking life skills and leadership with stewardship of schools and surrounding communities.
Together, these areas of learning nurture resilience, active citizenship and responsible leadership, preparing young people for further education, work and life beyond school.
ECOFUTURE
Learning leadership through environmental action.
EcoFuture is the environmental action pathway within Life Skills and Leadership Development. It enables learners to practise teamwork, responsibility, planning, problem-solving and service through school and community environmental activities. The pathway connects care for the environment with practical life skills and community leadership.
